Artist Statement

I am fascinated by self-transcendent experiences and the profound effect they can have on the human psyche. Since the beginning of time, transcendence has been part of the human experience as we “lose ourselves” in powerful song, meditative movement or ritualistic prayer, while more intense experiences result from a close brush with death or through psychedelia. Reported emotions from such states typically include overwhelming feelings of “oneness,” awe, and divine connection as we are lifted out of this material world to view our existence within the context of an expanding universe.

Through modes of painting, sculpture and digital installation, I aim to create a similar transformative space that represents an entry point into these alternate realms. My work incorporates various materials, visual symbols, and other sensory elements of a transcendent experience such as light, sound and color. Across mediums I make use of circuitry as a metaphor for sacred interconnectedness and a shared universal network.

As it relates to my personal quest for understanding, my work explores the possibility of spiritual transcendence outside traditional religious systems or structures. There are many pathways toward this state of higher awareness in which the ego is stripped away along with the many material concerns that divide our society. My work aims to elevate this idea as we consider what lies beyond our temporary physical world.
